Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales is an enchanting collection, retold by writer and critic Naomi Lewis, and contains 12 of Hans Christian Andersen's magnificent stories, including Thumbelina, a little girl no more than a thumb-joint high, The Emperor's New Clothes, the tale of a man who cares only for his appearance and The Little Mermaid, who longs to one day marry a human prince.

The narration was excellent, and I really had fun listening to most of these! Some of the stories are better than others, and it was really cool getting to hear The Snow Queen and recognize how it influenced CS Lewis. My favorites were Thumbelina, The Little Mermaid and The Snow Queen. Stories 3.5/5, Narration 5/5

I’m a big fan of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales and this is a lovely narrated edition. Jonah Hauer-King has a soft, soothing voice that fits the often somber tone of these stories. He does a great job creating different voices for the characters, and this breathes life into these classic tales. I also think it’s fitting that with this edition the Little Mermaid’s Prince tells us her story, which arguably makes the story even more bittersweet.

Naomi Lewis’ translation is exquisite. Her translations are my favorite of the ones I’ve read for Andersen’s texts. The prose are gorgeous, and are full of vivid descriptive imagery, which helps to build the unique, whimsical worlds of these fairy tales. Overall, I highly recommend this version of Andersen’s iconic stories.

Highly Recommended for Devotees of Andersen’s Works
