"Just around the corner from our subdivision is a guard rail. It was a tight corner that had harbored many accidents over the years. As I passed the guard rail, I did a double take.

"Through the sheets of rain, I could make out the figure of a man who stood on top of it as if contemplating jumping. I did not flip around immediately; in fact, I drove my car into my driveway and sat there for a second, having an inner fight with myself. Part of me was arguing it wasn’t my business and not to get involved, but the other part of me said, 'It’s Christmas eve, this guy might really need some help. Where is your holiday spirit?'

"I sighed loudly and pounded my fists on my steering wheel, before turning my key over and backing up out of my driveway.

"The rain was pounding down with no sign of letting up, and since there were no other cars on the road at the time, I flicked my high beams on to get a better look once I neared the guard rail.

"There was no sign of the man. My mind began to race. Had he actually jumped? I put my car into park and pulled off the road. I fumbled for my cellphone and ran out into the freezing rain to search for him."
