A defense attorney is prepared to play. But is she a pawn in a master’s deadly match? A twisting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni.

Keera Duggan was building a solid reputation as a Seattle prosecutor, until her romantic relationship with a senior colleague ended badly. For the competitive former chess prodigy, returning to her family’s failing criminal defense law firm to work for her father is the best shot she has. With the right moves, she hopes to restore the family’s reputation, her relationship with her father, and her career.

Keera’s chance to play in the big leagues comes when she’s retained by Vince LaRussa, an investment adviser accused of murdering his wealthy wife. There’s little hard evidence against him, but considering the couple’s impending and potentially nasty divorce, LaRussa faces life in prison. The prosecutor is equally challenging: Miller Ambrose, Keera’s former lover, who’s eager to destroy her in court on her first homicide defense.

As Keera and her team follow the evidence, they uncover a complicated and deadly game that’s more than Keera bargained for. When shocking information turns the case upside down, Keera must decide between her duty to her client, her family’s legacy, and her own future.

Critic reviews

“Fast-paced legal-intrigue gold that could be improved only by kicking off a new series.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Twist-filled.…John Grisham fans will be pleased.”Publishers Weekly

“One of the best puzzle books ever! I raced through the pages, which are packed full of compelling characters and taut gamesmanship, desperate to learn the answer to this extraordinary thriller, which is both whodunit and how-dunit. I would follow Robert Dugoni anywhere.”—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Shelly put me on to author Charlie Donlea so when this two for 1 credit came up and Wayne had 5 stars on this one, no brainer and I got 2 good books.
Frankly with the mystery daily deal selections of late, if either Shelly or Wayne have not read it, I am not interested. I have enough purchased dogs I will never listen to based on reviews that were meaningless.
This story was very entertaining just as Wayne contributed. If the author continues with this series, I am in.
I have a couple of this author’s books but did not continue on the Tracy Crosswhite series even though I really enjoyed book 1. I am not a fan of the narrator and passed on a few sales she narrates. I will have to check her out now that she has had time to deepen her voice since I first heard her.
This business is very hard on the vocal cords and many of my narrators have gotten so much better as they increase their narration library.

I love any book by Robert Dugoni. The first books I read of his were the Tracy Crosswhite series. Ever since then I’ve been trying to read everything that he comes out with. I love the way he writes and I always love his characters.

I loved the characters in the book the way he described the family was perfect, dysfunctional but loving. The way Patsy and Keera outline their argument and the way they worked together in the courtroom was amazing. The story definitely kept me engaged and I loved every minute of it! Can’t wait to read more by Robert Dugoni.
