In this, the first prose history in European civilization, Herodotus describes the growth of the Persian Empire with force, authority, and style. Perhaps most famously, the book tells the heroic tale of the Greeks' resistance to the vast invading force assembled by Xerxes, king of Persia. Here are not only the great battles - Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis - but also penetrating human insight and a powerful sense of epic destiny at work.

Holland has provided a superb overview of Herodotus’, Histories, that is well footnoted, and includes a considerable bibliography. Not only useful for the scholar for recap, Holland is attractive to the general audience. The Audible performance by David Timson is essential for the Rawlinson translation. The Herodotus is modernized in the audible version in minor ways that I would submit the reader/listener will appreciate. Listening to Timson read the Rawlinson translation while reading added to the texture and consideration of Herodotus. It was essential, at least to a first reading. Holland’s treatment helped to refamiliarize factual, sequences, characters, relationships. Thankfully there is a well produced, good quality, well performed Audible for Herodotus for this translation. An ancient classic deserves nothing less.

The sound of his voice and his accent, made me feel if I were listening to Herodotus himself. I learned a lot.

Excellent! David Timson brings passion to history!

I would not have been able to sit down and read this in book form but listening to a gentleman with a British accent read it to me while I multitask is perfect.

Best way to read Heroditis

Hitchens' command of the English language and ability to articulate his points so well, have made this one of my favorite books.
