Scotland Yard ha inviato a Parigi l'ispettore Pyke per "studiare" il metodo Maigret! Pyke è molto diligente e segue Maigret come un'ombra, cosa che fa impazzire il nostro commissario. Avrà modo di vedere Maigret all'opera quando a Porquerolles viene ucciso Marcellin, un piccolo malvivente che vive su una barca.
Delitto che non sarebbe stato di competenza del commissario se non fosse che Marcellin sosteneva di essere suo amico, e tutti sono convinti che sia morto proprio per questa ragione.
