DISCOVER FOUR FOUNDATIONS OF HAWAIIAN LIVING
FOR A PEACEFUL AND BALANCED LIFE.

More than just a beautiful paradise, Hawai'i has a rich culture, deeply rooted in tradition. Native Hawaiian and cultural expert Kainoa Daines has spent many years teaching visitors to the islands about this time-honored wisdom, and now he has teamed up with journalist Annie Daly to share that knowledge with you. Island Wisdom is an inspirational and rewarding journey through traditional Hawaiian teachings that have stood the test of time, from how to be pono (live a balanced life) to how to mālama 'āina (preserve and protect the land). Filled with the voices and guidance of Hawaiian elders, regional folklore, and ancient teachings—plus gorgeous local photography and illustrations throughout—Island Wisdom is a celebration of Hawaiian culture, language, and values that will give you a deeper understanding, appreciation, and respect for Hawai'i and the Hawaiian way of life.

Perfect for:

  • Fans of the New York Times bestseller The Little Book of Hygge
  • Travelers who have visited or are thinking of visiting Hawai'i
  • Listeners curious to learn about Hawaiian culture and language
  • Anyone seeking a more thoughtful and balanced life

Beautiful, inspiring Hawaiian Wisdom! I learned a lot about the language, history, culture, and so much more! I’ve read different books about Hawaiian culture and this was my favorite. Lots of practical and spiritual guidance on how to integrated Hawaiian traditions into non-Hawaiian culture. MahaloThank you to the Authors and all the Hawaiians involved and sharing their wisdom and putting this book out there.

My mom graduated from Kamehameha in 1962 and I graduated in 1990. I remember both Kainoa and Kaipo as humble leaders.

In this book, they could be telling my story! At 81 years old, still living in Hawai’i, my mom cannot swim, dance hula, nor speak ‘olelo Hawai’i, (but she can ride Da Bus and now, Da Rail!)

I moved away from home to serve in the military. I try to teach my sons Hawaiian values, but my sons resist, telling me I’m the most strict parent of all their friends.

After listening to this book, they understood my perspective better and are more receptive. My eldest has started wearing aloha shirts on aloha Fridays to connect with me and embrace his Hawaiian culture.

I love this book, because sometimes it’s really hard for me to understand and explain why I behave the way I do.

I lead the way I do, (nurturing, with compassionate accountability,) because it just feels right.

This book shares what matters in an organized way. If you are traveling to Hawai’i or trying to teach others how to “Live Aloha,” this book packs so much into a small package.

Maika’i no, Kainoa, Annie, and Kaipo! Mahalo nui loa…

Listening to this book felt like talking story with a good friend.
