Ellie has been divorced once, and now her latest boyfriend has jilted her. She doesn’t like, or trust men any longer. Ellie has strange dreams about her dog Belle that has recently passed. She doesn’t understand the dreams, but as the dreams continue and progress, she begins to understand their meaning, and what the dreams are telling her.

Johnathan is in an explosion in Iraq and is wounded. He is discharged and ends up at the VA Hospital in the small town of Breezewood, where he is dealing with the loss of his family, and his service dog, Sneaky Pete (Petey). He is released from the hospital and rents a house behind Ellie, which neither one is aware of. After several run-ins with Johnathan in town, she doesn’t like him, and he thinks she is a mental case. By chance, together they must save a stray dog from drowning.

After saving the dog, they begin to argue over who should get ownership of the stray dog. They compromise and agree to take turns keeping Jasper on alternating weeks, as in a child custody case. Things get hilarious and out of control with their arguments and actions, over who knows best for Jasper. Meanwhile, Jasper has plans of his own for these two. Jasper has no family or pack, but after Ellie and Johnathan save his life, he decides to make them part of his pack. Jasper is very cunning and is determined to form his pack
