Narrator 👎

The narrator sounded like a bad imitation of Scarlet from Gone With the Wind. She made Lucy sound petulant and obnoxious at times. Granted Ms. Chesney does make her characters completely clueless and selfish when it comes to recognizing love. A man rescues, risks his life, travels miles etc. etc. but if he doesn’t act or say exactly what he should according to her then he’s a scoundrel and not even worth thanking. This could have been a really good book if there had been more about the crime involved and less about the romance. It would have been interesting to read more about the underworld in London and the drug trade going on. There was a lot to work with including the men that were in attendance to the Duke’s mother and the many facets of society during this era in history. The loan sharks, murderous aristocracy’s warped sense of honor and attitude toward the middle class. I really like this author especially her poor relations series which is the best but I thought this book to be underdeveloped and not one of her better books. Disappointed.

Liked it

Though I felt Lucy’s character was inconsistent (sometimes strong, sometimes too wimpy), I reminded myself that it was to be expected in her circumstance and let myself enjoy the story. I especially liked the integrity of the hero in this one. Integrity is a rare thing in these often-ridiculous regency stories. Narration was very good.

An easy, light romance listen.

I enjoyed this light romance by Chesney. All of the characters were interesting. The hero and heroine were delightful together. Overall, a pleasant romance.

I love this writer!

Most stories are similar. Written from the womans POV. Fun Regency era romps. This one is as gothic as ever. Longing, rakes, and shenanigans.
