A novel about secrets and revenge by the number one Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Missing Sister. It’s only by confronting who she was then that she can understand who she is now.

I was born in captivity...

Two decades ago Marissa Mo escaped a basement prison - the only home she’d ever known. At twenty-seven, Marissa’s moved beyond the trauma and is working under a new name as a freelance photographer. But when she accepts a job covering a string of macabre murders in Portland, it’s impossible for Marissa not to remember.

Everything is eerily familiar. The same underground lairs. Sad trinkets and toys left behind, identical to those Marissa had as a child. And then there is the note meant just for her that freezes Marissa’s blood: See you soon, Missy.

To determine the killer’s next move, Marissa must retrieve her long-forgotten memories and return to a past she’s hidden away. But she won’t be facing her fears alone. Someone is waiting for her in the dark.

Critic reviews

“...Kate Rudd’s narration feels a bit understated, but not emotionally lacking. Telling the story from Claire’s first-person perspective, Rudd remains detached to some extent, as one who has experienced a well-publicized tragedy and the fame that results from it. Her range of unique voices include children, men, and women of various ages, and her use of them is subtle but effective and makes it easy to distinguish between characters.” (Booklist)

“A deep, deep dive into unspeakable memories and their unimaginably shocking legacy.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

“The suspenseful plot is matched by the convincing portrayal of the vulnerable Claire, who just wants to lead a normal life. Marr is a writer to watch.” (Publishers Weekly)

This appeared to be based somewhat on the Ohio home where three girls were held captive. Such cruelty.

SUCH A SAD CHILDHOOD

I’m getting frustrated with authors using the trope of having a compelling female protagonist succumb to a sleazy male character’s alleged charm. It doesn’t add anything to the story. Just makes me stop listening

Frustrating trope

This book was OK. It was just hard to stay focused on it. The storylines seem kind of slow and parts and a little confusing.

This story takes its time to let you in on all the secrets. The pace is perfect for the story though. Character development was spot on! Wow what a great twist. This was just one of those rare really good ominous mysteries with an interesting story to tell.

Narration was excellent!!!

Really Liked It

The twist of this book was open mouth . I had everyone in mind and every reason in the world why it was that person and this person - but who is was took me out

This was an open mouth emoji book.
