'Truth is stranger than fiction' is a cliche that is clamoring for recognition in the dearth of good books today. This story is based on a real man and his philosophy. Written in 1929, with snake oil salesmen, prohibitionists, and nouveau riche (before the crash) the narration was annoying at first. Narrators read the book as written. No one writes fiction in the language of Shakespeare today, either. I first saw the movie and felt it was special in spite of the soppy romance between Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman. The book is better.
