Alel is Relic and has learned she must hide to survive on the Black Streets. It is her red hair, one of the marks of her bloodline, that causes her death at the hands of men desperate to claim something pure as their own.

Yet she awakes, and she is no longer all human. Her creator, Sir Jax, is a man of the White Streets, but it does not take Alel long to discover the two streets are no different. Women and children are nothing more than slaves at the mercy of men who are cruel and constantly seek more wealth and status. But there is one she is drawn to, and she fears he is only interested in her Relic blood.

Sir Jax places Alel as the guardian of his mechanical creations and five part-human, part-machine children. The more Alel learns of the man who holds them all prisoner, the more she determines she must find freedom.

But how can one woman dare to defy the dictates of a society ruled by greed and cruelty to find happiness for herself and the children she comes to love?

Excellent narration

Perfect narration by Parris brought this unique word to life due to her difference voices and accents! I look forward to the next in the series

Fresh, interesting story with excellent narration!

I was unfamiliar with the world of Steampunk before I listened to this book, so inventive and interesting. An engaging story, I found myself really routing for the main character. The voice narration is excellent, clear, and really aids in the telling of this story with all of these different characters! I hope there's a sequel and I need to see which other books Mamie Parris narrates!
