I also liked the authors version of a reincarnation with this series…
Great story

None of these would be issues if the story didn’t linger on her thought processes while she has the same slow, painful realization each time. Especially in audiobook format it’s atrocious because you have Gwen nigh hysterical for a full 15 mins then a Man comes and she’s fine. In fact she’s SO fine that they think she can’t possibly be a 16 yo woman. The author can’t seem to remember if Gwen is actually extremely rational or an egregiously stereotypical overly emotional woman.
Who knows what characterization Gwen will have this time? Time to roll the dice. Oops! We get two chapters of hand wringing moralizing frozen in inaction Gwen, better luck next time!
And again… you cannot “kill in cold blood” when it’s a snap decision when a party member is under attack. It’s literally called the heat of the moment for a reason. The kind of emotion on display wouldn’t be an issue—hell she has a ton of trauma built up—except it has no consistency. There is no history of this egregious moralizing even with her first kills, basically it’s only at the author’s whim. Hell it’s not even without remorse! Does Gwen know English?
Also, she’s supposed to be an extremely shrewd consultant businesswoman from Australia yet has no understanding of China except a small tour… except wait she DOES!! She actually has all this knowledge now about developments that she’s had the chance to be a mewling terrified woman and be pathetically scared of this big bad scary country. Now that the story calls for it she’s actually an expert in Chinese business development and modernization.
Don’t even get me started on her becoming literally the dumbest character alive if Richard talks.
R: “They would’ve made me pledge allegiance to [faction she was taught about] and it would have become indentured servitude with functionally no way to be a part of the main family”
G: “Teehee, I know some of those words but I guess good for you heehee, I am just a silly woman who has only literally been involved in multiple clan inheritance based plot lines at this point.”
Desperately needs a developmental AND normal editor
