Lisa’s mother is dying. But Lisa doesn’t care....

Now in her early 40s, and with her life disintegrating around her, she’s been forced to return to her childhood home where the memories of her father and brother have long been repressed.

When the Victorian villa across the road goes up for sale, Lisa is naturally curious. One old woman has owned the property her whole life, and Lisa has never been allowed to step into the grounds before.

Now an odd young stranger invites her to explore the garden...but only after midnight.

But as everyone knows, after midnight is when the nightmares really begin.

Soon Lisa will be all alone in the world, and that will suit her just fine. Won’t it?

Not if her mother takes her guilty secret with her to the grave.

I enjoyed this novella a lot. I liked the way the story unraveled slowly with mysterious elements and eccentric characters. I appreciated the nod to the old fairy tale and admired the more contemporary feel to the story. I am looking forward to the next tale in the series. I enjoyed Elaine Wise's narration, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

This audiobook is everything you want in a listen: creepy, twisted, and utterly bizarre. I was hooked from the start and did not see the ending coming!
The author, Jeannie Wycherley, takes a horrific, wonderful detour from her normal style, and it translates perfectly to the audio format. The change of pace is immediate and effective.
Key Highlights for Listeners:
Pacing and Atmosphere: The author very effectively pulls the listener down into the darkness right from the start. Lisa’s homecoming—to visit her estranged, dying mother while facing homelessness herself—is anything but joyful. The oppressive environment is immediately felt, making it clear that something bad is coming.
The Story: Lisa is intrigued by the strange garden across the road, a house on the market, which leads her to uncover its secrets and its connection to her brother's death years ago. What follows is a story of magic, intrigue, and wild, supernatural family secrets.
The Listening Experience: This was a quick, very fun, sort-of creepy listen, unlike anything else I've picked up recently. It's a great choice for a binge-listen or a compelling background story.
If you are looking for a highly engaging, slightly unnerving tale that keeps you guessing until the final moments, this audiobook delivers!

Quite an interesting mystery with a supernatural twist. I honestly didn't see the ending being what it was till it happened.

As an American, listening to stories written in British English can sometimes be difficult, but if you get around the differences in how things are said you'll enjoy the story.

Fun mystery

POV:
You reluctantly return home as your estranged, ailing mother nears the end of her life and … you discover some really wild, supernatural family secrets…

This was a quick, very fun, sort-of creepy read, not quite like anything else I’ve read or watched … though it does pack some Coraline vibes.

It packs in

🥀 Dark magic.
⚉ A creepy garden.
🥀 A bit of ‘slice of life’.
⚉ Coming home.
🥀 Facing one’s past.
⚉ Repaying others’ / family debts.
🥀 Hilarious puns.
⚉ Hard lessons…

… and more.
Honestly, I’ll probably re-read this one occasionally, it’s pretty classic.

4.5 stars.
