The #1 New York Times bestseller about a famous novelist held hostage in a remote location by his “number one fan.” One of “Stephen King’s best…genuinely scary” (USA TODAY). Adapted into the classic film Misery (1990).

Paul Sheldon is a bestselling novelist who has finally met his number one fan. Her name is Annie Wilkes, and she is more than a rabid reader—she is Paul’s nurse, tending his shattered body after an automobile accident. But she is also furious that the author has killed off her favorite character in his latest book. Annie becomes his captor, keeping him prisoner in her isolated house.

Annie wants Paul to write a book that brings Misery back to life—just for her. She has a lot of ways to spur him on. One is a needle. Another is an axe. And if they don’t work, she can get really nasty.

“Terrifying” (San Francisco Chronicle), “dazzlingly well-written” (The Indianapolis Star), and “truly gripping” (Publishers Weekly), Misery is “classic Stephen King...full of twists and turns and mounting suspense” (The Boston Globe).

Featured Article: The Shining—Book vs. Movie

Set in the claustrophobia-inducing snow-covered peaks of an isolated hotel in the middle of the Rockies, The Shining is a classic work of psychological horror that’s just about as chilling as it gets. But it’s so, so much more than your classic story of spirits and a man’s descent into madness—it’s also a tender yet deeply painful meditation on addiction, family, abuse, and redemption. Stanley Kubrick rejected Stephen King's initial treatment of the screenplay, and the author was largely dissatisfied with his novel’s jump to the big screen. So what exactly are the differences between The Shining movie and the novel?

Psychological Horror • Gripping Suspense • Exceptional Narration • Terrifying Villain • Realistic Terror

I have read this book many years ago and saw the movie with Kathy Bates.
Somehow the voice of the narrator sometimes reminded me of Kathy Bates' voice.
She brings an amazingly scary story to live. I could not put it down.
I read some other reviews about "annoying music" and found this ridiculous. Music put in was very seldom, very short and ominous which added to to the story.
I will definitely re read/listen to this in the future.

Great story with a fantastic narrator

The reader has a very monotone voice and barely pauses from scene to scene so it is hard to differentiate in the beginning of the book and throughout. Also, there is this annoying music that just randomly plays and sometimes it's louder than the reader. This was the first audiobook I have heard with music and I hope it's the last. The story is great though. Definitely worthy of Stephen King's realm of crazy. If I choose to re-read this title, I will probably do it by paperback.

Voice is so monotone and Music is distracting

Not my first time with Misery, but just as good as the last. Not much else to say here.

The narrator really brought this story to life.

Loved the narration! Story felt a little too long at times, but pretty entertaining overall.

Epic narration

Great story, Anne is one of his scariest characters in all of SK's books. The narrator is fantastic, very much like Kathy Bates but a little more bipolar... loved her. King truly knows how to write.

Great story!!!! Narrator is great!!!
