It is London 1915 and Great Britain is at war with Germany. Stylish lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt's manservant Clarke is away in Flanders serving in the Royal Medical Corps. Isabel is anxious for his safety.

On the Home Front she has become involved with the Women's Emergency Corps. Through this work she has met a tall, well-built young woman named Hattie Peach. Hattie is now her maid and driver. Isabel is coping with her new life and then someone murders two girls from the WEC.

These take place in Shoreditch and there are fears that Jack the Ripper may be back. Isabel is asked to investigate and she embarks on a journey which becomes both emotional and very dangerous indeed.

Miss Hewitt investigates the ripper

A charming Victorian ripper tale with a very likeable heroine in Miss Hewitt. You like her support system and you wonder how on earth her good friend Clark ever managed to get married to a greedy old harpy like his wife. The story flowed nicely and you definitely wanted Miss Hewitt to succeed in her quest and if she was lucky enough, get the happily ever after, she might not have been looking for in the first place. It had interesting characters as well as quirky ones and they were all good and the action wasn't bad either, So when you get a chance pick up a copy and enjoy.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the storyline and plot, just would have preferred reading this one. I'm not big on British accents.

good book, bad performance

Expertly written and narrated. Miss Eve has one of the finest voices in the industry. The story had many twists n turns and there was never a dull moment. kudos to all involved.

One helluva mystery

Linda Stephenson has created a wonderful world, giving us a peek into WWI Britain. The characters (including a flatulent pup!) are well formed and each have their own voice, and the book even touches on themes not often encountered in stories set in this time period. Wonderfully narrated by Julia Eve, Miss Hewitt's world is one to which I cannot wait to return.
