London December 1917 and Great Britain is still at war with Germany. A notorious burglar known as The Snowman is currently terrorising the West End of London. Targeting the rich and fashionable, he leaves no evidence, except his calling card, a naively drawn snowman. Stylish lady detective, Miss Isabel Hewitt, is approached by retired actor Sir Willard Erskine and asked to find who this man is. Isabel has never investigated a burglar before but takes on the commission, as she has contacts in the criminal world, who may be able to help her. Her friend is burgled and an expensive obsidian jar stolen. Isabel begins her investigation but her property is soon broken into. The burglar is chased away and one of Isabel's dogs takes a bite out of his leg. He has left wet footprints all over the kitchen floor and a member of her staff saw him. Her inquiries lead her to a shady antique dealer in the West End but when the truth is finally unravelled, the outcome is not what she had expected.
