The staff in high society households are expected to be unobtrusive, but a dead butler in the dining room tends to get noticed. Did he die of natural causes or was he poisoned?

Cleo is hired by the housekeeper at a Mayfair residence after the police rule the sudden death of the butler was the result of natural causes. Not convinced by the verdict, she wants Cleo to prove foul play was involved. Considering he was acting mysteriously around some of the guests, and they were equally mysterious when they saw him, murder is a possibility.

When the investigation leads Cleo to another decades-old murder and the sudden disappearance of the primary suspect, she’s even more determined to uncover the truth. But the rich and powerful don’t like airing their dirty laundry, and her efforts are thwarted at every turn. Enlisting Harry Armitage to assist her, Cleo matches wits with her suspects in an effort to discover the secrets they’re trying desperately to hide.

I love the cast of characters. I still don’t care for Cleo’s selfishness but I do want her and Harry to be together!

Harry has my whole heart!

This was another good installment in the Cleopatra Fox mysteries. I still struggle with always figuring out who done it. I thought I almost had this one solved!

Another good installment

Love the setting and the story created by the author. The narrator does a great job of transporting us to that era. I enjoy the characters’ relationship evolving little by little and the way Harry is getting bolder when expressing his feelings towards Cleo. Please C.J., Keep them coming!

I love these series!

I love this series, and the narrating is absolutely phenomenal. The mysteries are well crafted, the dialogue is witty, and the historical world-building is truly wonderful. I agree that the love story feels problematically protracted and over-complicated, though, with the main character’s rationale for resisting its development feeling increasingly trite and undeveloped. It’s getting to the point where it’s actively detracting from her complexity and likability, which is truly a shame. I hope this shifts soon, and that there are many more stories to come. (The author has done a great job in other series with keeping the interest after the will-they/won’t-they portion passes, so I have hope!)

Wonderful series, phenomenal narrating, but…
