Vulnerable, provocative, and laugh-out-loud honest, Opened is more than a story about non-monogamy—it’s about what happens when a woman stops asking for permission to want more.

Courtney Boyer was a therapist and relationship coach who spent years teaching others how to communicate, connect, and love. But behind closed doors, her own marriage was suffocating. After years of rejection, loneliness, and shrinking herself to fit the mold of “perfect wife and mother,” she makes a bold, terrifying proposal at her seventeenth wedding anniversary: What if we opened the marriage?

What begins as a desperate bid to save her relationship becomes a raw, unflinching journey of self-discovery. From deconstructing purity culture to navigating desire, body image, and patriarchy, Courtney’s memoir peels back every layer of conditioning to reveal the woman she was always meant to be.

This isn’t a guidebook. It’s an intimate reckoning with marriage, motherhood, shame, and the price of finally choosing yourself. Courtney’s journey is messy, sexy, and most of all, real. And it just might make you question everything you’ve been taught about what women are allowed to want.

If you’ve ever wondered what it costs to silence your own needs—or what it takes to finally claim them—this book will meet you there. Honest, sensual, and deeply human, this memoir is a rallying cry for anyone who’s ever wondered: Is this all there is?

As someone from the polyam community, I felt Courtney and Nate’s journey with such compassion and vulnerability. I also respect how Courtney captured the necessary difficult conversations that occur when navigating multiple partners. It can be assumed that the polyam lifestyle is all about that glam, which it can be, but there’s also heartache, confusion and a level of planning that becomes second nature!

There is something incredibly humbling learning about another couples journey to ENM/polyamory. Courtney and Nate are amazing examples of how raw communication, endless support and the desire to deepen connections, can truly allow 2 people (1 mono / 1 polyam) to find the rhythm of life that works for them!

Beautiful insight into the human connection and experience!

I devoured this book. I finished it in less than 3 days, which is saying a lot for me with a non-fiction book. I value and appreciate Courtney (and Nate, by proxy) for sharing her experiences in a mono-poly relationship; those experiences have made me feel seen in a lot of ways.

Some of the book felt redundant and stuck on how damaging purity culture is (which I agree with generally and on a personal level, but it felt repetitive at a certain point). Regardless, I recommend this book to those in similar relationship styles or to those who are interested in learning more about behind the scenes of The MonoPoly Couple.

A raw, well written memoir about a woman choosing to fight for her happiness and the life she knew she needed. Courtney’s narration really brings the story alive. Her bravery to make hard choices and be the person she was meant to be doesn’t just apply to those considering polyamory, but any lifestyle that is seen to be “outside the norm.”

So much courage!

Courtney has given an amazing memoir of her journey of being polyamorous. She also wrote how her family reacted and some of the struggles involving them. Loved the stories as well!
