Following the events of The Umbrella Lady, young Saffron Faith Anders searches for family and love in this spine-tingling gothic fairy tale from the New York Times bestselling author of the Flowers in the Attic series and Landry series—now popular Lifetime movies.

After escaping the trauma of the Umbrella Lady’s home, thirteen-year-old Saffron Faith Anders is determined to find the father who abandoned her all those years ago. But when she finds him in a nearby town, Saffron is shocked to discover that he has married a woman he clearly had been involved with before her mother’s death. Worse, her father insists Saffron pretend to be his niece so he can continue to con his new wife’s family. Desperate for her father’s love, she goes along with the farce, but it soon becomes clear that perhaps it is better to face the world alone than trapped in a toxic and potentially dangerous family.

I can’t believe I have read every VC Andrews book she has written. The books she writes are somewhat similar with a strong female protagonist that finds something horrible or very surprising in the end. Usually, I am one who can almost always predict the outcome of the book through foreshadowing. I can’t do that with her books! Well, some things, but not the ending. It’s always something different than what I thought. I think it’s bad and ends up good. Vice versa. I don’t know how she does it. She has a God given gift to write. I am 49 and I remember reading the Flowers in the attic when I was young. I was absolutely in love with those books. Then the 40th anniversary came around and I thought, just for the fun of it, read the book again. That started it all several months ago. Even at my age, the books are magical. I wanted to tell the potential reader that her books may be similar in bare structure, but every one has its own soul. I love how there are series’ so the beauty doesn’t have to end so quickly.

this book was surprisingly good after a slow start with the umbrella lady. this was more like the true V.C. Andrew's books. I didn't want the book to end. narrative was much better in this book as well.
