Journalist Joe Oakes makes a living exposing supernatural hoaxes, but when he visits a secretive religious cult on a remote Scottish island, everything he thought he knew is overturned. While investigating a strange apparition caught briefly on film wandering the lonely beaches of Pig Island, so deformed it can hardly be human, Oakes crosses a border of electrical fencing, toxin-filled oil drums, and pigs' skulls to infiltrate the territory of the group's isolated founder, Malachi Dove. The violent consequences of Oakes' transgression are so catastrophic that it forces him to question the nature of evil and to face a terrible reality: Was Dove responsible for one of the bloodiest crimes Scotland has seen in years?

The story idea was great but unfortunately kind of unraveled and became a dis-organized bunch of smaller stories for getting the bigger story.

Is it just me or does our MØ need to step up her game a bit?

I was alerted to this book via an obscure horror books list. Which. Maybe there's a good reason this one is obscure. Its okay as far as horror books go. Not too bad, not very good. Something to have on while you do something else.
I feel like there was a very good idea burried underneath all the mediocre execution. However the entire book I found my self waiting for the 'horror' to happen. There was a twist at the end that makes things marginally better, however 90% of the book is pretty meaningless drama between characters that really adds nothing. Too much emphasis on things that dont matter and not enough on things that do. The book is like a tricycle missing a wheel. Itll get you, somewhere. But not quickly or with any semblance of grace.
Overall 5/10

Kind of odd.

Predictable. Not a likable character in sight. Pass on this one. I rarely return Audible books but this is one I don’t want to keep in my library. A journalist goes to an island where a cult lives and discovers that their leader has absconded to an isolated area of the island. There are rumors of a “big foot” creature on the island. The journalist is hit on the head after getting electrocuted. For some reason all the pigs seem to be missing and someone conveniently puts him unconscious on a boat back to the mainland. He decides to go back to the island to “get his revenge” on whomever attacked him and upon his return he finds an island full of dead people. I knew who did it even before the book was half over and I kept holding on hoping there would be some plot twist or a character I could route for and now that it’s over I’m just glad. Easy pass and wouldn’t recommend on this one

I thought this book was a dark parody for most of the listen. I have yet to read this author but have heard much of him...too bad I chose this book as my introduction. The reactions of the characters to the main crux of the storyline seem preposterously overblown...I didn't know whether to take it seriously or point and laugh. All in all, I was disappointed when I figured out that I was supposed to feel scared...or at least *tense*..all along. I wasn't. I was just frustrated that I wasted a credit on this piece of poo.

*SPOILER ALERT*
So, I guess the premise of this story is that there are some people out there who are born with a vestigial tail. As a medical practitioner, the first thing that pops into my mind is "Big whoop...you want scary? Let's re-arrange some chromosomes." But evidently, having a vestigial tail is a VERY BIG DEAL and...evil ensues? Or, just some very bad behavior? I don't know - but a medical semi-anomaly is hardly spine-tingling. When it was revealed that the Big Scary Monster is really just a person with a birth defect the story went from scary to just silly and a little mean. I wouldn't recommend this book. Not even if it was on sale.

Thought this was a parody for a while....it isn't
