It was one hell of an inheritance for former Chicago reporter Tom Coleman: a broken-down pickup truck, ramshackle campground, a canoe livery - and one pot-smoking, barely working employee he doesn’t need, doesn’t want, and can’t afford. But the truth is, after losing a child and a marriage, Tom doesn’t really care. And life is nice and quiet in the middle of nowhere. Until a drug lab blows up near his property—putting Tom in contact with the woman he once loved, a small-town cop with a chip on his shoulder, and a powerful local who doesn’t want him poking his nose where it doesn’t belong. Tom doesn’t want to get involved in the first place. But in the hardscrabble Nebraska Sandhills, storms gather suddenly and bad blood runs deep. Now a quiet summer on the river is turning into a dangerous season of grudges, betrayal, and violent reckoning—and it’s already too late to find shelter...

Like that this isn’t sexually explicit in any way, but is still a target audience of adults. Every character is developed with damage and recent personal grief. Narrator is a bit choppy though.

Good story kinda ends abrupt

Maybe it is my fault, but the plot was hard to follow. I had to back up and replay many sections. It did not gtab me and force me to listen nonstop like many of the other works offered here. And although I'm from California, I an married to an actual woman and have never used drugs... except maybe a little caffein occasionally.

The reader's performance was good; the problem was with the story.

Hard to Follow

A very engaging work lots of twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed that at times had trouble keeping some of the names of the characters street which made it slightly less enjoyable. I would still recommend this book. Thank you to the author and to the reader.

Very good listening

This book kept me entertained for hours! the characters were always getting in trouble and throw in a mean cop for a measure of injustice.
