A.H. Sayce
A.H. Sayce (1845-1933) was a British historian and linguist who served as Professor of Assyriology at the University of Oxford from 1891 to 1919. Records of the Past, 2nd Series, Volume I is part of a corpus of translations of fascinating mythological and historical texts from the Ancient Near East edited by Sayce. This volume comprises texts of inscriptions, dynastic tables, administrative and legal documents, plus two versions of the Mesopotamian Creation Epic also known as "Enuma Elish". It includes The Chronicles of the Babylonians, The Inscriptions of Telloh, An Inscription of Tiglath-Pileser I, King of Assyria, The Assyrian Story of the Creation, The Babylonian Story of the Creation According to the Tradition of Cutha, Babylonian Lawsuits and Judgments, The Inscription of Menuas, King of Ararat, in the Vannic Language, and The Ancient Hebrew Inscription of Siloam. Although most of these texts were composed in the first millennium BCE, the myths were borrowed by the Assyrians and Babylonians from more ancient Sumerian sources.
