South Africa – 1976 to 1994

A time of turbulence as the struggle against apartheid reaches its zenith, pushing South Africa to the brink. But for a one small boy in the leafy northern suburbs of Johannesburg ... his beloved housekeeper is serving fish fingers for lunch.

This is the tale of Hamish Charles Sutherland Fraser – chorister, horse rider, schoolboy actor and, in his dreams, 1st XV rugby star and young ladies’ delight. A boy who loves climbing trees in the spring and a girl named Reggie. An odd child growing up in a conflicted, scary, beautiful society.

A young South African who hasn’t learnt the rules.

I liked the first person approach. It made me feel closer to the characters. I wish there were fewer negative

A most enjoyable read. I didn’t want to stop listening.!

I enjoyed everything about this book especially how his family & Reggie understood him so well. He never gave up. I loved that & how he tried so hard despite the cruelty of some of the boys.

His innocence.

Now I have read all three of Hendry’s books and I have never been disappointed! Reggie and Me is a wonderfully told story. The characters thoughts are so real and richly complex. Hendry’s writing is richly descriptive. His use of language is so creative and beautiful! I wish I could see the whole world as Hendry writes. It would make for delightful days! I don’t think I have ever read a more beautifully presented ending! This book left me with a peaceful feeling: through all the ups and downs it is great to be alive.

Amazing story once again! Great delivery!

James Hendry delivers a brilliantly written narrative that takes me back to my childhood in South Africa, I could almost smell the highveld during my schooling days when listening to his brilliant delivery. This story is really a wonderful mix of unapologetic humor, history, childhood awkwardness (that we mostly all faced at one point) and relationships. James is trully a wonderful South Africa talent. well done!

a wonderfully funny eloquent story
