From the "grand duchess" of British mysteries, the 22nd installment of the New York Times best-selling William Monk series.

Commander William Monk has learned to live with the fact that he cannot remember the events of his life prior to a horrific carriage accident years ago. But when a ghost from his past, a man he has no recollection of, attempts to frame him for a series of murders, he must rely on the help of his wife, Hester, and his close friend, Oliver Rathbone, in order to free himself - from both the charges and the demons that have haunted him since the accident.

I felt transported to Victorian England where horrific conditions existed and brave people worked to change them. In this case we get a very period-specific view of megalomania along with a first rate mystery. Feminist slant without male bashing. I love it.

Very absorbing. I got my whole house cleaned almost without noticing.

The story is rich in characterization and for followers of the Monk series, it is satisfying to see the maturation of the main characters as they move to happier, stable places in their lives.

Excellent Book

Back to good old police work with the villain trying to outwit Monk

But with the band of friends and Oliver they did not stand a chance.

At first I thought having Monk possibly spending time in San Francisco at the time of the gold rush in 1849 was preposterous, but I ended up loving it. Finding out more about Monk's lost years is everything I didn't know I needed. The whole story was very good and quite entertaining. David Colacci is a wonderful narrator.

Great entry in the series.

This addition to the series is a total thriller from the investigation through the courtroom scenes and the final rowdy ending. Once again Monk's forgotten past rises up to menace him from two different points. There were tons of moments that I found myself holding my breath, wondering how it was going to end. I adore Oliver's new love interest and hope Perry keeps her around. She and Hester could be good friends. The narrator is most excellent.
