It's Christmas and the well-born guests who have gathered at Applecross for a delicious weekend of relaxation are warmed by roaring fires, mistletoe, and gorgeously wrapped gifts.

It's scarcely the setting for misfortune, and no one - not even that clever young aristocrat and budding sleuth Vespasia Cumming-Gould - anticipates the tragedy that is to darken this light-hearted holiday house party.

But soon one young woman lies dead, a suicide, and Vespasia must uncover the heartbreaking truth behind the tragedy.

I have all of Anne Perry's Christmas books and they were wonderful. That didn't stop me from listening to this fantastic audio version. Well done!

I loved this book!

Apparently this series of Christmas stories are spin-offs of side characters from her main series. Maybe they’re better if you already know them from that. But this wasn’t really a mystery and the central concept didn’t really make any sense and when there finally was a twist/reveal, it was extremely obvious. And they keep going on these supposedly dangerous, harrowing journeys where absolutely nothing happens.

Not really a mystery

Interesting, well thought out, and the secrets of each character were revealed over time. It was a really enjoyable story, but ít could have used more references to Christmas.

So much better than I was expecting!

I like the narrator. This was my first time listening to him. I thought the story was interesting, but not stellar if I had not read another Christmas novella by Anne Perry I might not have continued.

A journey to hell and back

Descriptions of Scottish landscape at Christmas were beautifully done. You were right there with each gale and storm. Fun to read about Vespasia as a young mother, but puzzling as to why the children have not been featured in other books. Still, a lovely, lovely book

The best Anne Perry Christmas novella!
