Continuing the work of the award-winning Sand Talk, Tyson Yunkaporta casts an Indigenous lens on contemporary society, challenging us to face conflict and embrace conversation to find our way onto the right track.

With Right Story, Wrong Story, Apalech Clan member Tyson Yunkaporta, from far north Queensland, tackles the divisions that prevent us from talking to one another. Yunkaporta invites us to confront life’s biggest questions and arms us with the tools we need to really listen, and to open our minds to change based upon our connections with others. He makes this point through discussions with a diverse range of people across social and political divides including:

  • liberal economists
  • memorization experts
  • Frisian ecologists
  • and Elders who are wood carvers, mathematicians, and storytellers.

Building upon the Indigenous tradition of “yarning” to weave our individual narratives into the great narrative that includes us all across any and all differences, Yunkaporta argues that story is at the heart of everything. But what is right or wrong story?

I greatly appreciate this book for keeping it real and being honest about how fucked we are and yet providing so many starting places to think deeper and transform culture.

The deep understanding of storytelling is important to all humans on earth and especially to writers. I would like Tyson to know that this book strikes a deep cord and in spite of its darkness does shed light which is huge because the light can always overcome the dark. At any rate staying up all night to listen was well worth it. And on a personal note there are many of us parallel thinkers dear Author. And in spite of the dark tones, I laughed out loud at a lot of his comments. And here we are arrived at the golden age again, where the f ists have stolen pink bunny again. Thank you again dear Tyson for one of the most important books ever written!

Brilliant

A dark excursion, but engaging, full of epiphanies. Not for the faint of heart, but well worth the journey. I’ll very likely take the trip through this audible book again soon, but next time I’ll take a companion. So much of it is about relationship, to the earth, to others, to contradicting ideas. A different me emerged through these travels. It’s very much a book for digesting these troubled times (2025).

Dark, rich, like volcanic soil
