#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the master of the legal thriller comes a “deeply engaging and enjoyable” (USA Today) novel featuring one of John Grisham’s most colorful, outrageous, and vividly drawn characters ever.

ONE OF THE WASHINGTON POST AND NPR’S BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR

On the right side of the law—sort of—Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun. His office is a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, and fine leather chairs. He has no firm, no partners, and only one employee: his heavily armed driver, who also happens to be his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddie.

Sebastian defends people other lawyers won’t go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house.

Why these clients? Because Sebastian believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial—even if he has to bend the law to secure one.

Critic reviews

“Terrific . . . inventive . . . John Grisham still makes it look easy [with] distinctive characters, tricky legal predicaments and rogueishly cheating ways to worm out of them.”—Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post

“With a blunt, rude, gravelly poetic wiseguy voice . . . Rudd comes across as a kind of twenty-first-century Philip Marlowe.”—Benjamin Percy, The New York Times Book Review

“Deeply engaging and entertaining . . . [Grisham finds] intense drama in the little skirmishes that play out across our legal system every day.”—Charles Finch, USA Today

“Grisham has taken a step in an intriguing new direction.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

Really liked this story but hate it when the ending feels like the author just got tired of writing and just stopped

I hated for this book to end. Fabulous story that got better by the chapter. Very engaging character in Sebastian Ruud. Hope to see more of him. Fantastic narrator. John Grisham hit it out of the park.

Another home run from John Grisham

An author writes a book people like and then they think after that every book he writes has to be exactly the same. This book is different from John Grishams others ; that just shows how creative he is ! What consistently comes through in John Grisham's books is his character development, that makes you think about the the people in the book even after you put it down. So ,you want to pick the book back up again soon to continue reading or your listening device, to continue listening, to find out how the characters are and what they are thinking about and what they're going to do next. This Book has a series of stories but with the same characters kind of like adventures or episodes. they are all good and they all carry with them philosophies that make you think and keep thinking even after you have finished the book . then almost immediately you may begin wondering if by chance maybe there is another one he's written that you missed somewhere , anxious again for the rhythm of his storytelling of unsung heros finding the high road through lifes continuous unexpected and expected but then different or changed, events. John Grisham's books take you into a world where you want to go again.

John Grisham always great

Rogue Lawyer is a good book and one I would recommend. It's a bit different in that instead of seeing a lawyer deal with just one case or one client, like Grisham's other tales, you see a lawyer deal with a variety of clients and more of his day-to-day life. The main character isn't your typical hero type either which is nice. At times one can have sympathy for the main character and at many other times I felt the guy was a scum bag who got what he deserved. The book is full of Grisham's rants against the justice system and police, but that only helps the story. This book is largely a day in the life of a criminal defender attorney who is very similar to an ambulance chaser. Due to this the plot can seem disjointed but it works. This is not my all time favorite book but I liked it and thought it was worth the read.

Not your typically law thriller

This book was a collection of short stories with the main character. I didn't know that before hand and was a bit disappointed at first but it's still a good and interesting read.

Short Stories but still Good
