Fate made me an outcast. My true mate marked me for death.

As the daughter of my pack’s lame wolf, I’m an outcast, a social reject considered unsuitable for mating. My life is a daily grind of drudgery, humiliation, and abuse.

Then during a ceremony to our god, Fenris-Wulf, fate made me the alpha’s true mate.

My heart fills with hope. This could be the end of my problems, a happy life filled with acceptance, but when I shift, I become a monster.

Horrified at what I’ve become, the other wolves attack. They cast my broken and bleeding body on the altar as a sacrifice, leaving me to die.

But when Fenris-Wulf comes to claim my soul, he sees something in me that’s precious and takes me to his lair.

He offers me the power to get revenge, but in return, I must help him destroy the world....

If you like dark, sexy paranormal romances with adventure, conflict, and a rejected mate, you’ll love Sacrificed.

I read a lot of reviews that called this book “a fever dream” or “chaotic” and I’ll admit, it was written in a very nonstop way. This author doesn’t do a plot/resolution, new-plot/new-resolution format, she just keeps layering. So her world keeps growing and moving at breakneck speed. The shifter component is just one aspect. The h (Lydia) is lower than omega in her pack, because she’s the daughter of a deposed alpha (though assassination). And instead of caring for the widow and child of a past leader, the wolves (pack rulers) toss the h and her mother to the slums. They also bully them and use them as free labour. Then, in a twist, the h gets fated to the current alpha and things REALLY go pear shaped.

One notable thing: this rejected story has the h moving on with someone else, NOT reconciling with her rejector (that’s a very important detail for me in this trope, since I prefer a heavy grovel and reconciliation). Also note, the world is supernatural with ALL SORTS of beings, plus various shifter species, and a hierarchy of shifters both inside and outside of their species. There’s also magic used and a hierarchy of magic users. There’s also modern tech even though the world feels medieval. The book also incorporates Norse Gods, hell, hell beasts, and ‘pocket’ dimensions. So yeah, it’s a lot, but very interesting.

Unfortunately this was a one-and-done series for me, I tried book 2 but hated the direction the author went. In book 1 the heroine uses magic that is gifted to her. It keeps her alive, and allows her to become very powerful. You get fooled into thinking she’s a badass. But it gets stripped away in book 2 and she becomes a pathetically weak doormat, yikes.

Sacrificed is a the story of Lydia, the shifter Cinderella who eventually gets her comeuppance. Sort of. I listened to the story in a single sitting because I couldn’t wait to hear what happened next, and the story was too original for me to accurately guess. The combination of obscure Norse mythology, the rejected mate trope, and the quasi-rags to riches archetype is a winning mix. Bella Klaus has out-written and out-classed a whole sub-genre of paranormal romance. She should definitely give lessons because she has ruined the rating curve.

A must read shifter romance
