Valerie Tejeda is an author of fiction and nonfiction, an internationally published journalist, and an astrology writer and creator of the pop astrology digital brand Big Cosmic Energy. Her work has been published in Self Magazine, Vanity Fair, MTV, Teen Vogue, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Huffington Post, Latina, et al, and she’s had multiple articles cited in scholarly journals, including Oxford University Press. Valerie has a BA in psychology and certificates in astrology and music therapy. She is the author of the young adult urban fantasy, Hollywood Witch Hunter. Valerie is a Californian who loves iced coffee, palm trees, and asking people, "When’s your birthday?" when she first meets them.

There's a lot of self-care practices in "Self Care by the Moon" that work something like a proverb, where the longer you practice them the more you get out of them. They work well for beginners who have never heard of or tried any meditations at all, and they work well for seasoned yogis too. Ultimately, the self-care practices found in these pages have ancient roots with modern dressings; most of them are backed by modern science in one form or fashion as well.

What I found most unique about "Self Care by the Moon" was the lunar lens through which these meditations and self-care practices are viewed. But more importantly, I appreciated the overarching message of empowerment and encouragement.

The age of science has brought us a seemingly unending string of technological marvels, and also ever-increasing levels of complexity. The world we now inhabit can at times be difficult to navigate and quite overwhelming. Books like "Self Care by the Moon" help to remind us it's okay... in fact it's even GOOD... to press pause on life and focus on taking care of ourselves.

Why? The author puts it well: "You can't pour from an empty cup."

This was such a great introduction to living by the lunar cycle with self-care! My only thing is I wish I could save these meditations to a playlist because they are so good and relaxing. I could listen to Valerie read and lead meditations all day! I hear there is a second book coming next year and I will be listening.

I’ve always longed for some kind of deeper connection with the moon but didn’t know where to start. Many other books were either over or underwhelming. This one hit the spot! Excellent explanation of the moon phases and examples of how to relate self care practices to that specific phase. I can’t wait to get started!

I bought this book for a cozy fall read and it was exactly that. Very calming with lots of great information on lunar cycles and moon astrology. What I loved the most was being reminded to take care myself. I needed that. Thank you Valerie Tejeda for the inspiration!

I learned a lot about moon. Honestly, I don't think about this practice is something mistical or spiritual. But this is a good way to create a monthly self care ritual.
