Sense and Sensibility is a sharply detailed portrait of the decorum surrounding courtship and the importance of marriage for women in early 19th-century upper-class English society. The story revolves around Elinor and Marianne Dashwood who, as members of the upper class, cannot "work" for a living and must therefore make a suitable marriage to ensure their livelihood. Elinor is a sensible, rational creature, while her younger sister, Marianne, is wildly romantic - a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion.

I have never really enjoyed many classics. I did enjoy Pride and Prejudice, mostly because I did enjoy Mr. Darcy. That affection overcame all the trappings of marrying well during that time AND the actual signs of his affection in his actions. In this one, I dare say that there is more heartbreak than romance and Edward is not a favorite. He didn't seem to have any regard for Elinor at all. It had an intriguing story, though.

I really enjoyed this book. I do also love the language used within it but sometimes it was so high level I would need to take a break. I also had to pause review what what gone over in easy language and then continue. Great read though!

While not my favorite of Austen's works, the Dashwood sisters are compelling protagonists, the supporting cast are enjoyable, and there are just enough details to give you a good picture of what life was like during the period when the story was set. What prevented this from being an outstanding performance or story for me were the musical interludes that occurred between chapters, the whole Ferras marriage plot, and some of the voices the narrator used for the male characters. However, overall it was a very easy listen, and the plot was easy enough to follow.

An Enjoyable Austen Piece

Jane Austin's writing is timeless, the family of Dashwood endearing. The performance/narration of this book is done very well, I am transported to Austin's time, and engaged in the characters. Well done!

Jane Austen is the mother of all romance writers and her books have stood the test of time, Marion Castle was a new narrator for me and I really liked her. Though I have read this book a number of times, this is the first time I have listened to it. It was great.
