Born to fell trees. Now he must topple an empire.

Derrik has come of age in a land torn by savage war and evil magic. His neighbors mock his yearning to become a warrior, the protector of the weak. What an absurd dream in their quiet, forgotten corner of the empire! Then bloodthirsty beasts invade their village, and all laughter curdles into a scream of terror.

Fatally unprepared, Derrik must become the hero he never was. To save the innocent, he plunges into a quest no mortal should survive.

With death snarling at his heels, Derrik flees to an ancient elf he instinctively distrusts. A dreaded dragon sunders the skies; a crucial ally – or another deadly foe.

An endless war the logger wages, shredding the darkness that consumes the helpless. Yet the deadliest threat is not the monsters shattering the vast empire. It’s the deep secret stalking his little village.

This story was interesting so I made myself listen to the whole thing. However, AI narration is terrible. The story was told in an almost monotone way. The names of people and places throughout the story would be said several different ways, with no consistency. Words that are spelled the same but have different meanings, depending on how the word is spoken, were usually not pronounced correctly to match what was being said. This makes the story very boring when it would not have been if performed by a human. I will not listen to anymore books narrated with AI and I know there are many others that feel the same way. I get that it’s a lot more cost effective than hiring a person but the customer base for the story will be greatly diminished.
