In Sadima's time, magic has been banned, and she is forced to hide her ability to communicate with animals. But then a young nobleman bent on bringing magic back to the world sends his servant to find Sadima, and a new life opens before her.
Centuries later, an academy of magic welcomes 10 applicants, but only one will graduate.

Dark, intense, and wonderful

The magic school here doesn't let kids eat until they can conjure their own food. And it just gets worse from there.
Absolutely amazing read - couldn't take out my headphones (was listening to the audio version). The voice actor was also very good.
Warning - this is the first in a series. The story doesn't end at the end of this book. But I can't wait for the next one.

There's a strong sense of atmosphere in both storylines; the listener can fully envision Salima's journey and the dark twisty tunnels of the underground school where a group of boys fight to learn scraps of magic and earn scraps of food. This book is full of details and complex characters, but this isn't a story about a warm, quirky magic school. In this school, only the last student alive will graduate.
Dark? Yes. But I found it very intriguing! I've now listened to the second book in the trilogy and am eagerly awaiting the third. No ETA on that yet, so be warned.
If you're looking for a lot of heavy sword fighting or sweet romance, this isn't the series for you. If you can get caught up in an atmospheric storyline that keeps you constantly wondering how the characters are going to get out of their current predicament, and how they can get from *here* to *there*, then this may be more up your alley.
And the narrator was very good. He handled both sides of the story easily.
