For a haunted house to be born, somebody has to die.

In the sleepy coastal town of New Castle, New Hampshire, seventeen-year-old Billy Hasler's life is about to take a terrifying turn. When his best friend David Spivey inherits a mysterious house on a nearby island, it seems like the perfect place to spend their final summer before heading off to college. No parents. No police. No responsibilities.

As they dig into the island's dark past, they awaken an ancient evil that has influenced generations. What begins as an innocent summer adventure quickly descends into a nightmare.

Something I Keep Upstairs is a haunting exploration of friendship, sacrifice, and the darkness lurking just beyond our understanding.

I must not be the demographic for this book. I’ve read other JD Barker stories that were more thoughtful and complex; this just read like it was written by or for tweens.

Hmm

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

It kept my interest for the most part but waned often. A bit too convoluted and FAR too much exposition! Not scary... just weird and sad.

Brigadoon!

I've read several books by this author and loved them. but this one was so confusing and hard to follow i had to force myself to finish it.

hard to follow

Both my husband and I have enjoyed J.D.Barker’s stories in the past and this proved to be just an enjoyable. It has a very Stephen King-ish feel to it (another favorite). The twist and turns had us engrossed all the way to the end.

Great ghost story

This reminded me so much of Stephen King. That’s a huge compliment. And this book does not disappoint. I tore through it and will reread for nuance. Love it.
