It’s spring break! But Max doesn’t get to go to the comic book convention to see his favorite superhero Mr. Amazing like he wants to. No, he has to spend it at the beach with his family. And his vacation turns into one horrible disaster after another. First, there’s the sticky road trip, thanks to his little sister’s messy eating habits. Then, he suffers the worst sunburn ever, and to top all of that, his nose has a dangerous confrontation with a crab. Max’s spring break might not be completely ruined if only he and his new friends can win the sand castle-building contest.

Alisdair Baird, the author, has created a wonderful series featuring Max. This is one of their rare books that makes listening to audiobooks fun and relaxing … well, until Max does something, and you have to let out that belly laugh! Baird’s writing is concise and rich with vivid details that give the listener solid insight into the mind of Max. Each character is fully developed and suits the situation at hand. I love the aunt who never suspected her way of life would be shaken slightly.
The narrator, Andrew James Roberts, gives another excellent performance. He sounds just like I think Max and his family and friends would sound. He projects just the perfect amount of awe, mischievousness, and other preteen angst.
Baird and Roberts together, have breathed life into Max and his story to the point that hilarity is a sure thing and the longing of a time passed has come calling. Yes, this is a young adult book but trust me when I say young adults of ALL AGES will love Max! Don’t miss this book or the series! I will say there is one major flaw – each book and the series itself are just not long enough! I want more!
