James White
The second instalment in James White’s acclaimed Sector General series, where human and alien medicine meet in a massive deep-space hospital station on the Galactic Rim. Sector General is a place where all kinds of patients and medics from all worlds are welcome. But for the first time, the hospital is threatened by powerful creatures who cause utter havoc.

Please remember James White wrote the first stories in this series YEARS before Star Trek, and with a different focus in his perception of a possible future. Different, but equally revolutionary and excellent in the sci-fi genre.
White's focus is centered on the medical (and sometimes psychological) aspect of a future with many known and just-discovered beings from different worlds. It was -- and IS -- a unique contribution to ALL science fiction.
Consider how different Star Trek -- or Star Wars -- would look from the view of doctors on different ships and on different worlds! And then, think of a hospital equivalent to the Mayo -- an elite hospital filled with the best of the best specialists, focused on three things. First, train the new best of the best in how to treat a dizzying variety of beings. Second, to establish good will between worlds not through politics or exploration but through the secular and total medical commitment to help. Third, to establish the pinnacle of medical research for...everyone.
It's hope, hilarity, questions you never considered, humor only White could have thought of, and I've NEVER understood why White and his world didn't form a Star Trek/Star Wars/Sector General trifecta of sci-fi fundamental entertainment basics.
Yes, there's some soft sexism -- the main character begins the series with a crush on an experienced colleague written by an author in the late 1950s.
That's about the ONLY caution/con I'd give someone about this series.
I also immediately snapped up the next two, no regrets, not waiting for my credits. And I hope they go back to include the ambulance ship stories...and a small part of me is hoping this heralds a possible film?
I bought this SO fast!
