James T. Kirk is the youngest man to be promoted to the rank of captain in Federation history. His crew consists of a first officer who finds him impetuous; a chief engineer who finds him arrogent; a chief medical officer who finds him trifling; and a helmsman who wants a transfer.

But the young crew, which would later become the legendary space explorers, quickly puts aside their differences when a monstrous starship appears on their nascent flight path.© and (P)1988 Paramount Pictures, All Rights Reserved; AUDIOWORKS Is an Imprint of Simon & Schuster Audio Division, Simon & Schuster Inc.

The story & voice performers were good, but especially for a hearing impaired individual, the sound effects were seriously disturbing, and made comprehension of the text difficult in the extreme nearly every instance that they were overlaid the text.

Sound effects are PROFOUNDLY distracting.

I haven’t read this paperback, but I’m going to know. Also use headphones for best listening. The narration is far clearer that way. This really reminded me of an old Star Trek episode.

Lots of fun

Overall not bad. Sound effects sometimes hinder Voice dialogue. But Takei and Nimoy are wonderful.

Decent first adventure story.

Personally, I loved hearing George Takei and Leonard Nimoy.
The banter between McCoy and Spock was priceless.
The use (and misuse) of Shakespeare was inspired, uproarious even.
The vivid settings played in my mind like an episode with a hundred million dollar script.
It was as though I had miraculously discovered an overlooked episode of the original series - one without any cringeworthy scenes.

Superb, although some sound effects were too loud.
