On vacation in Grand Isle, Louisiana, a married woman falls in love with a charming, attentive young man. The relationship spurs Edna Pontellier to explore her longing for independence and creative fulfillment. It also compels her to defy conventions, rejecting the constraints of marriage and motherhood.

First published in 1899, Kate Chopin's novel drew criticism for its daring portrayal of female infidelity. Rediscovered decades later, it is now lauded for its lyricism, honesty, and astute social commentary. A groundbreaking feminist work and a landmark of modernist literature, The Awakening depicts one woman's journey to define her true self.

Revised edition: Previously published as The Awakening, this edition of The Awakening (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

It was all but impossible to listen to this narration. The reader's (Mary Robinette Kowal's) attempt at accents were the most annoying I've ever heard. I only trudged on to finish the story, but will never listen to another book she narrates.

Annoying reading

For the love of God, please fix the description of this audiobook. I was confused beyond belief. we are cruising along with the story of Edna, the narrator takes half a breath, says Beyond The Bayou and then launches into a completely different story without ever saying the Awakening has ended. I listened for another 45 minutes totally confused as to what this new plot line has to do with Edna before spending another 45 minutes hitting the back button and digging around on the internet to find out what the hell was going on. I liked the story of The Awakening, but this production gets an F for me. Narrator was okay except for when she was trying to do the voices of all the men in the story. it was almost comical, like someone doing the voices of all the bears in a rendition of the Three Bears for a child.
