Lady Phillipa's heart is on the verge of being broken.

The man she has exchanged letters with for months now refuses to answer her missives. That man, after the death of his older brother, is now the Duke of Grey, one of the most powerful lords in the land. When his sister invites Phillipa to the country, she jumps at the chance to discover why the duke forsook their love. When she arrives, she finds a broken, brooding man who insists keeping her away is for her own protection. But in his beautiful face, marred by scars, she sees the soul of the man she loves. Nothing will stop her from fighting for their love. Not even his quest for vengeance.

Brutally wounded at the battle of Waterloo, Anthony, Duke of Grey, knows he can never allow Phillipa into his life. It matters not that he treasured every letter she wrote him or that those letters sustained him under the brutal command of Captain Adams. Now a duke, even though his body is irreparably scarred, he is determined to bring Adams to justice for his horrible cruelty towards the youngest members of his crew. Grey will stop at nothing to keep Phillipa safe and away from his war-torn heart. After all, he is not the young man he once was. No, he will not allow Phillipa into his tortured world, even as he longs for her body and soul.

When she arrives at his castle, can he turn her away, or will love tame the beast?

That word was used so many times throughout the book it was a distraction. When I was in high school I read a short story about 2 boys on an adventure with their dog called Moreover. They named him for the only dog mentioned in the Bible, “moreover, the dog…,” so every time the narrator said “moreover,” I added “the dog.” Wish I’d known beforehand of the overuse so I could have kept a tally. Both narrators gave very stiff performances, sounding like they were just learning to read out loud. Parts of the story were repeated several times, also annoying, but the storyline itself was good.

This was a good story but the narrators sound as though they are not natural speakers. By this I mean over pronunciation is odd of everything by both male and female readers. I believe this is an issue of direction and production preference.

Good story - odd narration

This audio book was pure melodrama of the worst kind; almost entirely dialogue, with virtually no subtlety or originality in either the storyline or the narration. The female narrator was better than the male, but neither seemed to express more than one emotion. Even at its brief length, I was compelled to skip forward, hoping for it to improve; alas it did not. I had been disappointed with the previous story, and vowed not to read more in the series, but was foolishly tempted by the sale for under $5. However, this was exceedingly more disappointing than it's predecessor in the series, and I wish I had stuck to my earlier resolve, and not bought it. Lesson learned.

Extremely disappointing
