After years of questioning her sanity, Kat Delancey reluctantly returns to the old family manor as its legal owner, hoping desperately to silence the doubts in her mind and leave the home's tragic past behind her once and for all. But it turns out to be harder than she expected, and not just because of the estranged step-family waiting for her - because maybe Kat's mind was never playing tricks on her after all, and maybe the manor harbors a far more malevolent presence than she ever dreamed...

What annoyed me the most about this one was the overuse of the phrase, "it had to be a trick" every time something unexplained or spooky happened. Not enough spooky, either.

Rather predictable.

Great storyline and great narration with a little bit of plot twist. I enjoyed listening to this audible and they were moments where I couldn’t stop listening.

While I'm not much of a horror fan, this was a good example of an underrated book. In the beginning and most of the middle, the story had more of a suspense/psychological thriller vibe before ending into an unraveling ghost story. This was a story that captures all the senses, most particularly, of the human mind debating whether you're following instinct or descending into madness.

Narrative performance was well done.

I loved that it kept my attention. Even during the slower parts. The ending was interesting as well.

It was the genre I was looking for and it was free
