For DCI Gillard, sometimes old sins cast long shadows…

Under a motorway flyover lies the body of a young man. Days earlier, he had been involved in an altercation with DCI Craig Gillard's pregnant partner Sam. Now he's dead...

Meanwhile, something is brewing in the criminal underworld. Whispers of a big job have reached the Met's Flying Squad. Something is going to be stolen, and soon. Something worth 500m.

But what? And where? And how does it relate to the body under the overpass? It should be a simple case: stop the burglary, crack the gang, find the murderer—but for Gillard, once again it's personal…

Fast-paced and utterly unputdownable, the next installment of the DCI Gillard series is perfect for fans of Robert Bryndza, Stuart Macbride and Faith Martin.

After the last book I was ready o quit the series. I had gotten most of them for free so no loss if I did. Luckily, I looked at the reviews for this book before quitting as it was very good. This series is at its best when it focuses on Gillard and his team in a standard police procedural. This book is only minimally involved with a murder. Numerous suspects are involved but it is not a whodunit. More a who is it done to? They are investigating a rumored heist planned for a specific day that could bring in a huge haul. They have clues to what will happen, they know when but not the target. A pricless work of art? A gem collection? a bank? Murders do occur but they are secondary to the main plot. Louth also appears to recognize the abilities of his reader as he frequently, and sometimes repetitively mentions the accent a character speaks with, something Marston York does well. My only criticism is the opening scene which loses a lot of suspense because you find yourself repeatedly thinking, What an idiot! at the moves made by Gillard's very pregnant wife. None of which are necesssary. If I had not read reviews I would have quit there and missed an otherwise good story.

Glad I listened to the reviews

Another good police mystery from Nick Louth. Wish he wouldn’t entangle the silly wife as much as he does. It’s not really necessary to the meat of the story. Silly Sam (Samantha) detracts from the series.

Excellent narration, as always.

Good Story, ugh the wife
