Captain Hepburn had a wife he didn’t love and a mistress who made hand-crafted dolls; in fact, she’d made one in the image of the captain, resplendent in his military uniform, and now his wife wants to buy it. In this taut tale, love is a complicated battle, and the soldier is outflanked.

The story was, oh, pardon me, what story? Stay away, don’t waste your time I did it for you…

I really liked the storyline and was enjoying this book until the ending. It kind of ruined it for me. I guess I expected a better, more satisfying ending that made sense to me. It fell flat for me. Narration was good.

Davina Porter, like Patrick Tull, could "read the phone book" and I would enjoy her wonderful range as a narrator. The story is a fine, complex analysis of the times and of war on both men and women. The wife's discussion with Hannale is an subtle play of jealousy and objectivity. Of course a tale by DH Lawrence is superb and deserves 5 stars.

I'm only part way through and will return it, as the genre isn't really for me. However, those who appreciate the tale will become absorbed in the masterful reading by Porter.

A classic, though not for me
