Rinehart's first American mystery published in 1908, reminding Agatha Christie fans of her first country-house English mystery, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, published 12 years later. Rinehart outsold Christie in their mutual lifetime until Rinehart died in 1958. Rinehart was often called "The American Agatha Christie", as was Emma Lathen. This book has servants, a secret room, multigenerational goings-on, and more like Styles did. A great new series for modern Agatha Christie fans.

I’m sure the narrator tried his best and he did improve a little, but I could only get a few chapters in. The music was too distracting in the background. The reader was sorry, not good. I am not even going to try to finish this. The story sounded like it might have been interesting, but I’m gonna just find the book and read it.

The distractioning music

Music distracts from story read by the VERY worst narrator EVER!!!! I have read the book in the past and the music was irritating and the narrator kept stopping like he didn't know the next word. Absolutely AWFUL!!!!!! Just buy the paperback.

Really bad narrator and annoying music. Save your money, it is available for free on Hoopla with much better narration and no music!

Really bad narrator

The narrator often spoke hauntingly, correcting himself often without re-recording, and paused at awkward places in a sentence. He spoke in a monotone. This is a terrible narration. The piano music in the background did not enhance the narration and was monotonous. I stopped listening at chapter nine

Narration ruined the story
