Everyone Nicholas Bateman ever loved has died. Except Violet Caulfield, which must mean he never loved her. Nine years after she threw him over to marry a viscount, Nick is a widowed duke who prefers isolation.

When a friend convinces him to leave his lair of self-imposed solitude, he considers taking another wife, provided she agrees to his terms: no emotional attachment of any kind. Now widowed, Lady Violet Pendleton hopes for a second chance with the man she’s always loved. But she isn’t prepared for the desolation in his soul or the animosity he still bears toward her. Despite those obstacles, it’s clear their passion hasn’t dimmed.

However, the heat between them isn’t enough to melt the Duke of Ice, and this time Violet may find herself the jilted party. Can love, once so tragically lost, finally be found?

Nick was terrible. So self involved and whisy washy. I wouldn't trust him. Very disappointing story.

Not much of a man

This has been a fun series so I was really surprised with this book. I found the main character, Nick, to be so over the top annoying, indecisive, and self absorbed, that I had a hard time getting thru the book. For brief periods, he could be very charming, but it never lasted. Violet, the leading lady, on the other hand was everything you could want. She was beautiful and charming and loving and kind and how she put up with Nick, is beyond me. haha Narration was lovely.

Least favorite of the series

I have liked the rest of this series, but unfortunately the only hero in this story is the secondary male lead Simon. The lead character Nick is a whiny, rude, self- pitying, self-absorbed, jackass. He's completely unlikeable because he feels sorry for himself and believes that gives him the right to be a nasty cretin to any and everybody who has the misfortune to cross his path. This is one of the few times I spent the book rooting against a HEA. I kept hoping Simon would finally get disgusted with Nick's insufferable behavior and deck his butt. I was also hoping Violet, who was a way too nice, caring, compassionate character that deserved better than Nick, would throw a drink in his face and walk away to find someone better. Nick didn't deserve her and she definitely didn't deserve to be stuck with Nick.

I also agree with one of the other reviewers about the spinster widow who believes she barren story line. If it were a dead horse it would have beaten until there wasn't even dust left. Same goes for the brooding, oh poor pitying me hero and the I can't stand up for myself heroine story lines.

Absolutely annoying male lead character

Every book is so well put together. At 1st I didn't think it would grab my attention, however as always I can never stopped listening. Keep on writing the way you do. However, I am glad that we geared away from the 1st 6 books and ventured into a new adventure.

Always amazing
