Six months have passed since the first murder investigation Detective Reed Mattox and his K-9 partner worked together, finding them in the throes of a steamy Midwestern summer, dealing with the usual increase in low-level crime that the hottest months tend to bring, when something unexpected happens.

A body is found, and then another, and soon Reed and Billie are on the trail of a potential serial killer whose only pattern for his crimes seems to be no pattern at all.

Battling against the heat and the clock, the K-9 team must sort through the crimes to identify a common thread that ties them all together. If they can, they may be able to stop the murders.

If they can't, there's no telling how many more people will become victims before the dog days of summer end....

I hate it when I have already figured it out 2/3 of the way through.

I enjoy the Reed and Billie tales and this one was no exception. I look forward to the next one!

Well crafted

The story was okay but I figured out the plot twist early . The main reasons I couldn’t finish it were that the dog seems like an add on character rather then an integral partner in solving the case and the sing song narration when the text wasn’t actual dialogue became too much.

Couldn’t finish

The plots are engaging. Relationships between Reed and his fellow officers are sometimes sandpaperish but interesting how they play out. Reed has gotten used to working with his canine partner. His earlier reluctance to working with her has morphed into a great respect. The storylines through the first and second books are so different that they make a person want to work through all the offerings Stevens has to offer.
