There's no such thing as an empty house.... From acclaimed author Andrew Pyper, a gripping novel of psychological suspense about four men haunted by a secret from childhood.

Trevor, Randy, Ben, and Carl grew up together in the small town of Grimshaw as many boys do, playing hockey and forging friendships that run deep. Twenty-four years later, when Ben commits suicide, the three remaining friends gather once again in their hometown. But going home means going back, and that's not always easy.

The three men are forced to confront their memories of a sinister crime that happened in an abandoned house in their neighbourhood, a crime that claws its way into the present, leaving its indelible mark on everyone.

Critic reviews

“Andrew Pyper has set a high bar for thrillers… and other Canadian crime writers will be hard-pressed to top him.” (The National Post)
"Everything you could ask for in a thriller. It's psychologically unnerving, moves like a bullet, and is fraught with so much tension you might crack a tooth reading it. Outstanding in every way." (Dennis Lehane)

The author sets the perfect mood for this story..a bit dark, but it was difficult to stop listening. The main character, though flawed, is a very sympathetic.....lots of twists...excellent...

Intriguing premise and characters

Unless you really enjoy ghosts and childhood visions, I would pass. And even if you do, it falls well short of a scary novel. Hard to swallow 3 adult men in their 40's still fearing the ghostly images of a small town haunted house. This book was way over hyped for my taste...

Over active imagination...weak story.

This book was not poorly written, but it is misrepresented as a "psychological thriller" when in fact it is a horror novel. Not my cup of tea, had I known it was about an evil spirit haunting a house and killing people I would have never have wasted the credit.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

persons who like books about paranormal events or true evil lurking in houses and world that shape events. Not me.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Anything by Denise Mina, Val McDermid, Ian Rankin- I love the Scottish sense of timing, the language and the intricate solutions to the crimes. Not for the light of heart though.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Not memorable but ok

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Guardians?

Nothing wrong with it just not my genre- i misinterpreted the description and lost a credit. Too bad.

Any additional comments?

Maybe adding a more concise review of the books would be more helpful in choosing what to buy.
