London, 1940. After years of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor—well, to themselves, anyway—Ellie McDonnell and her family have turned over a new leaf as they help the government’s war effort. It’s true that the straight-laced Major Ramsey didn’t give them much choice, but still, Ellie must admit she doesn’t miss breaking and entering as much as she might have thought. What she does miss is the challenge of unlocking an impossible code and the adrenaline rush that comes from being somewhere she shouldn’t.

So when Major Ramsey turns up unannounced with another job, she can’t say no. A woman’s body has been found floating in the Thames, with a bracelet locked onto her wrist and a cameo locket attached to it. It’s clear this woman was involved in espionage, but whose side was she on? Who was she reporting to? And who wanted her dead?

Not only is this series written with intelligence and humor, and just the right amount of cunning and intrigued to leave you on the edge of your seat… but I realized, as I was listening that it does something else. Somehow, the author has managed to convey the very feeling of truly being alive and making your way through each day and each moment in the strange mix of calm and turmoil and comfort and chaos that was London in 1940. The narration to is just perfect.
Brilliant on every level.

I was glad to see that the 2 storylines are not wrapped up in a neat little bow in the second novel. We get a little closer to Ellie’s mother’s story, and a little more complicated with Felix and the Major, but now it’s on the Book 3!!

I am loving this series!!!

Narrator sounds much older than the 24 year old Ellie. Book one describes Ellie as being able to fit in at a society event so the narrator’s lower class accent also feels out of place for the character.

Narrator not a great fit
