Rare eyewitness account of early, chaotic days of WWII - Nazi invasion of Poland, Siege of Warsaw, and first months of Occupation - written by a young working mother. Rulka Langer's eye for detail and lively storytelling bring to life, from her unique vantage point, the opening chapter of the struggle between good and evil which ultimately engulfed the entire globe.

It was interesting to get a woman and mother’s perspective of the occupation of Warsaw during WWII, but the character/author at the time was only in her early thirties and the narrator sounded like a grandmother. It also seemed like her husband was an afterthought - and that the plight of the Jews in Warsaw was barely mentioned. The message seemed to be that suffering builds character, which feels like a glossing over of the horrors of war.
