On a dark night in 1775, Lizzie Boylston is awakened by the sound of cannons. From a hill south of Boston, she watches as fires burn in Charlestown, in a battle that she soon discovers has claimed her husband's life.

Alone in a new town, Lizzie grieves privately but takes comfort in her deepening friendship with Abigail Adams. Soon, word spreads of Lizzie's extraordinary midwifery and healing skills, and she begins to channel her grief into caring for those who need her. But when two traveling patriots are poisoned, Lizzie finds herself with far more complicated matters on her hands - she suspects a political plot intended to harm Abigail and her family. Determined to uncover the truth, Lizzie becomes entangled in a conspiracy that could not only destroy her livelihood - and her chance at finding love again - but also lead to the downfall of a new nation.

As another Reviewer stated and I pass along here, if you were a fan of the Outlander series or the Into the Wilderness series you will love this book too! The prose is bittersweet without being saccharin. The Revolutionary war time period is one of such dramatic patriotism yet it's also accurately portrayed by the hardworking women who kept the farms going and contributed in any way they could amidst just surviving. It's a love story, a friendship novel, a mystery thriller and a dramatic saga all rolled into one. The Narrator did a tremendous job of telling the story and it wouldn't have been the same without her - she captured the feel of the book perfectly. I highly recommend this book!!!!

I read several books a week, so many per year. This is by far one of the best I have read in a very long time. It brings alive the Revolution and the roles that women and families played in our fight for independence.

Enchanting, engaging tale.

This is a really interesting book about women who are struggling to survive during the American Revolution. Abigail Adams plays a large roll in this book as the neighbor and friend of Lizzie. It shows the strength that women had during these hard times when there were relatively few men left in the area. It is a heartwarming story and I recommend it.

Very enjoyable!
