Aureliane Whitlocke is crowned into a bond she does not fully understand.

As queen, she is bound to a living Crown that entwines ruler and land, a ritual meant to ensure continuity and stability. The process is ancient, carefully regulated, and irreversible. Queens are expected to endure it quietly.

Seren Ashcombe has spent her life documenting what follows.

As Royal Archivist, Seren records the slow erosion of those who come before Aureliane. Her role is observational, precise, and deliberately detached. But when the Crown’s influence begins to take hold of Aureliane faster than expected, Seren notices inconsistencies in the records. Subtle alterations. Gaps where certainty should be.

As Aureliane struggles to maintain a sense of self within a body increasingly shaped by the Crown, Seren is drawn closer, not through rebellion or grand gestures, but through sustained presence, shared attention, and care expressed in small, deliberate acts.

Together, they begin to question a system built on endurance rather than consent, and whether continuity must always come at the cost of those who uphold it.

The Open Spiral is a quiet, slow-burn sapphic romance about intimacy formed through proximity, emotional restraint, and the choice to remain. It is a story of devotion without spectacle, and love that develops not through defiance, but through staying.

* This book contains depictions of non-consensual magical binding, explored critically and from a survivor’s perspective.

This is my second book by Jennifer Piper, and I am extending my Audible subscription by a month because I want to listen to more. Her use of imagery and metaphor really makes this prose sing. Seems like every 10-15 minutes some turn of phrase makes me smile for sheer joy of the language itself.

I just wish the audio was narrated by a human, with human emotions and inflection, instead of an AI. The virtual voice is actively hard to stay focused on for long periods of time, and it breaks me out of my flow whenever it takes the wrong pronunciation of a homonym or randomized the pronunciation of the same fantasy name three different ways in one paragraph.
