Yes, nothing wrong with the story, one of my favorites by Lovecraft! How did the narrator detract from the book?
The performance was terrible! We couldn't get through 5 minutes without turning it off. It was cheap and cheesy and overdone. What character would you cut from The Picture In The House?

The sound effects were 100% unnecessary.Pitiful Proffering

I enjoy the story "The Picture In The House" and I had a long, long drive, so I was quite happy to download this audiobook. The price seemed quite reasonable. However, this audiobook was so awful that it took me over an hour to get through this short production. I spent several long stretches staring out the window, dreading a return to the story.
It didn't take much listening for me to realize something was wrong. Rather than launch right into the story, there is a one or two minute advertisement for the group that performed and produced the work.
The sound effects (admittedly, I don't care for sound fx at all in an audiobook; I'm a reader--I already have a good imagination)tend to drown out the narration.
The voice work is my biggest gripe with this production. The narrator is particularly awful. Early on in the work it's clear that he doesn't quite understand the meaning of what he's reading, and there are strange pauses and puzzling emphasis on certain words. He sounds as if he's channelling William Shatner trying to play Vincent Price. If anyone thinks I'm trying to be witty for wit's sake at the expense of the people who produced this, I'm not. It's that bad.
There's much more to loathe about this production. One positive thing I can say is that most of the things I detested about this audiobook were things that the producers did on purpose, and not out of amateurism. Also, the narration improves toward the end of the story. Neither of these factors makes this audiobook worthwhile, I'm afraid.
If this had been free it still would be a poor product, but I doubt I would review it with such strong opinion. But having paid for it, I feel robbed.
